With so many devices, software apps and contact lists, the cloud based contact managers - contacts.google.com, iCloud.com and outlook.com seem to be the way to go now and in the long term. It's a fast changing area.

Google Contacts is Google's contact management tool that is available in its free email service Gmail, as a standalone service, and as a part of Google's business-oriented suite of web apps Google Apps.

Interoperation - Google Contacts can be synchronized with mobile devices and operating systems (e.g., Android, Symbian, iOS, BlackBerry, Palm, Pocket PC, or Windows Phone) or with PC applications (e.g., Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird) via third party software, and Google's own Google Sync app - https://www.google.com/search?q=google+sync+outlook

Contacts on the iPhone and iPad

"The Contacts app comes built-in to every iPhone and iPad and can't be uninstalled. Whether you want to call, iMessage, email, or FaceTime someone, the Contacts app for iOS is your central repository for staying in touch with the people that matter most to you.

The original version of the Contacts app was only available for iPad. A later version of iOS brought a dedicated Contacts app to the iPhone as well. For the most part, the Contacts app simply provides the same functionality that the Contacts tab in the Phone app does.

While both the Phone and Contacts app let you view your contacts, edit them, and sort them by groups, you still can't create and delete groups via either app on iOS. In order to do this you must either use the Address Book app for Mac or use the iCloud website, if you use the iCloud service to store your contacts, in order to create groups and organize your contacts into them. Once you've done that, iOS should automatically sync group names to both the Contacts app and Phone app. You can then show and hide groups on demand in order to find contacts faster"

iTunes for Windows: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad

You can use iTunes to sync the contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks, and email account information on your computer with your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. iTunes also syncs this information from your device to your computer—for example, if you add contacts on your iPad, syncing adds those contacts to Windows address book or Outlook Express on your computer.

When you sync, iTunes determines whether your device or your computer contains the most recent information, and lets you choose the information you want to sync.
